Stan Kuhn replied to Kari Sauder's discussion Needed: High Efficiency NG HVAC for a 2,100 sf single story building in the group HVAC
"Keri, my thoughts are that you do NOT want a wall heater at each end, unless uneven heating isn't a concern.  What about cooling?  Is it needed/wanted?  If you go with a high efficiency furnace it will be direct vent.  I…"

Stan Kuhn replied to Mike Kandel's discussion BPI Launches Home Rating Program Using DOE's Home Energy Score
"If there is a comprehensive energy audit, the HES will very likely be proven as just a guess based upon the averages.  And I seriously doubt it will be marketed for what it is.  But the taxpayers have already paid out millions and there…"

Stan Kuhn replied to Kari Sauder's discussion raised ranch heating, can't balance it in the group HVAC
"My experience with the ESV3 credentialed contractors is that they only go through the process (kicking and screaming) when they're required to.  So you need to ask for their experience level, and choose one with good experience.  As…"

Stan Kuhn replied to Kari Sauder's discussion raised ranch heating, can't balance it in the group HVAC
"Kari, unless you have mechanical ventilation your home is tight enough.  7 ACH@50 equates to about the .35 ACH natural rate.  If you do have it then make it as tight as possible."

Stan Kuhn replied to Kari Sauder's discussion raised ranch heating, can't balance it in the group HVAC
"Kari,  You didn't note that you did a duct leakage test.  If not, I would suggest that first (total and leakage to outside), then airflow at each supply & return to be sure the air is getting to/from where it should.  If you…"

Lumpy Spray Foam Insulation in an Attic

"That looks better than 99% of the foam I've seen.  I did see ONE flash coat on walls that looked good.  The worst (so far) was a two-section, connected, roof where one section was foamed on the deck underside (much more lumpy…"

Stan Kuhn replied to John Kuiper's discussion HERS rating & heat losing features in the group Home Energy Ratings
"I don't have any good advice, but my opinion is that the owners of homes with obvious energy waste "just because I want it" need to include the usage in the rating, and compensate otherwise if they want a reasonable rating. …"

How To Deal With Sprinkler Piping Installation

I have my first Energy Star home that has sprinkler piping installed in the attic.  The pipes run about 6 inches above the drywall.  The sprinkler company says there must be an insulation void between the ceiling top and the piping to avoid freezing, so the insulator placed fiberglass batts over the piping to keep the blown fiberglass away from the pipes, which will leave (roughly) a 6-inch by 24-inch air gap directly above the drywall at each pipe run.  This, of course, violates the Energy…See More
