A(n Energy Efficient) Night Before Christmas

It seems like every one and their brother has a Night Before Christmas parody. Mine appeared in fragments on Twitter a short while ago, during an odd moment of creative inspiration, and would’ve been completely lost to Twistory, had it not been for my good friend Sean Lintow Sr. capturing it. So, with only some minor editorial adjustments, here it is, in all its glory:…See More

Professional Interests
Old home preservation and energy efficient remodels of very old homes, with minimal impact or compromise of historic import or vernacular character. We strive to identify the best possible energy efficiency practices currently emerging from the building sciences field, and formulate construction strategies to effectively adapt these practices to very old homes.

With extensive backgrounds in mathematics and the computational sciences, we are also interested in developing integrated solutions for home performance measurement, data capture/reduction/analysis, and control of home energy systems.

Also interested in the overall problem of distributed co-generation of energy in the smart-grid environment and where ever we can help out in that emerging problem space.

Three Simple Acts That Can Make A Difference

Posted on May 5, 2011 at 1:39pm 0 Comments

This past April 22nd was Earth Day 2011, and it's official theme was A Billion Acts of Green. The basic idea is that, if at least a billion of us each pledged to perform some relatively simple “act of green”, we’d all be that much closer to a greener, more sustainable world. Here are examples of three simple, relatively low cost (lightweight, if you…

How To Kill A Watt While Sizing a UPS

Posted on March 28, 2011 at 6:00am 0 Comments

In my last two posts, I described some basic water conservation measures we’ve taken at the Poole Ancestral Homestead. We’ll return to that topic in the near future. But for now, I’ve turned my attention to optimizing our home’s use of electric power.

Utility-provided electricity is often an expensive form of energy. And it’s seldom efficient, because coal- and gas-fired plants (from which most of us get our electricity) actually waste a great deal of energy in the form of heat…

Low-Flow Aerators All Around

Posted on March 20, 2011 at 8:00pm 0 Comments

Today, another small step on the Poole Ancestral Homestead’s journey to deep-energy-retrofit nirvana was taken, and it consisted of installing low-flow aerators on all of our faucets. [article]

Thanks, John. Back at you!

What's going on this week? I thought about you when I was in Savannah the week before last. Maybe you and I could co-write a blog post about brining energy efficiency to historic homes.

What do you think?

Hey John! I would love to take a look at what you come up with. I've heard of a lot of people struggling with historic district review boards about making energy upgrades to their homes. The debate is a tough one, but I know we can find common ground. I think we'll get there through education. This is a great place to start!

Where is the presentation going to be? And, will it be recorded?!?!?! Would love to see that. Any chance I could get a copy of the presentation after the event?

Well done, John! Congrats!

BTW, I'm really looking forward to the discussions on the Historic Home Group!

I may not have said anything to you before, but went through Preservation Field School at the University of Hawai'i. I'm a big fan of preservation work, and would like to do a loooooooot more.

John, thanks for the comment. I hope the group will be a resource for us old-building geeks (and us old building-geeks).
