John Nicholas replied to Sean Lintow Sr's discussion Blower Doors & Methods Used in the group Best Practices (Residential)
"Different houses, different problems, different approaches. A multipoint gives you a slope. The slope tells you about the holes and sizes.  Knowing about the size of the holes tells you something about where they might be. The slope helps with…"

John Nicholas replied to Sean Lintow Sr's discussion Blower Doors & Methods Used in the group Best Practices (Residential)
"Bud,  I pretty much agree with Sean's points.  Given the time it takes to set up the BD,  running a multi-point is nothing.  The IR work and using the standards emphasizing the points he made are important.  Also they…"

John Nicholas replied to Sean Lintow Sr's discussion Blower Doors & Methods Used in the group Best Practices (Residential)

John Nicholas replied to Hal Skinner's discussion How much heat energy is lost through the floor of a house?
"A search on that website for spectral response charts showed 3 results dated 2004, 2010 and 2011.  The two latest were about space missions. The old one was a study of forest fire scars in Europe. The question is not that different surface…"

John Nicholas replied to Hal Skinner's discussion How much heat energy is lost through the floor of a house?
"You would be better contacting a Level III Thermographer.   I have been a Level II for 2 years.  I don't think your idea of a chart of frequencies makes sense. Different colors of light are different frequencies. Does Blue transfer…"

John Nicholas replied to Hal Skinner's discussion How much heat energy is lost through the floor of a house?
"A surface with an emissivity of .90  does not have anything to do with frequencies of the radiation.  The Stefan-Bolzmann Law of Emissivity and Kirchoff's Law clearly explain the concepts of  Emissivity and Absorption. The .1…"

John Nicholas replied to Trip Smith's discussion Where to spend my marketing dollars?

John Nicholas replied to Hal Skinner's discussion How much heat energy is lost through the floor of a house?
"I pointed you to possible data sources for heat loss information through the floor.  I merely pointed out that foundation walls might give you a better chance at data. Now you are asking about effects of specifications for a specific material…"

John Nicholas replied to Hal Skinner's discussion How much heat energy is lost through the floor of a house?
"Hal,  Unless you are looking at some type of cantilevered overhang or 'bump out' looking for floors will not get you much. Start looking at foundations and slabs. Hanging any type of insulation from a floor will not help much.…"

John Nicholas replied to Kevin Jordan's discussion Does anyone have pointers on approaching real estate industry?

Most homes in this area have a gas fired natural draft hot water heater. They come complete with a draft diverter.  The purpose of the draft diverter is to send the exhaust gasses (containing Carbon Monoxide, Sulphur Dioxide etc) into the home if the chimney or flue doesn't allow them to go up. Left is a picture of a properly installed heater with a draft diverter. Note the space between the tank and the flue. That is the design that allow the noxious gasses to back draft into the…

Energy Auditors Rock! They Depressurize!

You’ve been in the attic, the crawl spaces or basement, climbed up and down any stairs several times. There have been some questions from the home owner and perhaps from the kids in the house. If you are like me, you’ve bumped your head a few times on low hanging fruit. It has been a fun, rewarding and perhaps a little stressful.

The thing I do to relieve this stress, is to depressurize. Yes, let all that built up stress just…
