David N. Armington replied to Martin Newmark's discussion Best Practice for Retrofit Insulation on Modern Knee Walls in Attics
"This can be more problematic than it seems.  In Northern climates, thermal loss and active air circulation cause ice dams.  I might recommend an approach that in effect isolates the area inside the thermal envelope, meaning the floor,…"

"I'm surprised no one has mentioned the external air source; in many parts of the country it is a code requirement for new construction.  As a retrofit, a damper-like plate and chute can be purchased through a brick supplier, let into the…"

David N. Armington replied to Judi Lyall's discussion What to do with a pocket door in the group Best Practices (Residential)
"True.  Maybe remove enough plaster to angle in a nozzle, but that does nothing for the vertical gaps.  It is a shame that veneer plastering, over blueboard and a bonding agent, is a lost art.  I would do almost anything to solve a…"

David N. Armington replied to Judi Lyall's discussion What to do with a pocket door in the group Best Practices (Residential)
"If all these remedial actions seem difficult, why not waste the drywall?  If you came down several inches from the ceiling, to avoid a corner joint, you could slide the door open and have easy access with foam or caulk, and be quite…"

Sticky Doors

Posted on August 6, 2015 at 1:38pm 0 Comments

The riddle is: "How many sides does a door have?" The answer is 6, While the vertical edges may be painted, the top and bottoms may not be sealed, which is different from just painting. Most door manufacturers will not honor a warranty if this is neglected. The styles may transmit water vapor along the entire height of the door through end grain, and some side expansion of the rails may occur.
