Historic Denver has recruited three homeowners with properties that represent historic architectural styles that can commonly be found in the Denver area. Each of these homes had an energy audit performed and the result is the video below, which illustrates the process and provides valuable tips for saving energy.

The first property is a late nineteenth century brick Italianate home. This property has been updated on the interior and has replacement windows. The purpose of including a home with non-original windows is to get quantifiable information on how these windows perform compared to the other homes which retain their original windows.

The second property is a c.1930 bungalow which retains much of its original fabric and is a good representative of the bungalow style. The attic space above the first floor was finished many years ago, so pay attention to how that space performs compared to the original construction.

The final property is a c.1958 Mid-Century Modern home in excellent condition with original windows and many of the original HVAC components. Homes of this vintage are relative newcomers to the "historic" category, and require a rethinking of traditional approaches to preservation.

Each of these homeowners has specific concerns that they would like addressed by the energy auditor, which makes the video valuable not only as an explanation of the energy audit process, but also to address common issues that many owners of older homes share.
All of these devices are used for monitoring our daily lives. So, why don't we monitor our home's energy usage so we don't get surprised with an expensive electric bill at the end of the month? Well, I do - and so do many other homeowners who are recognizing the benefits of being able to view their energy use (and cost) in real-time with power cost monitoring systems. This workshop will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of home energy monitoring, costs of the options available on the market today and what works best for your home.
