Comment by Dennis McCarthy on May 31, 2012 at 7:41am Its probably just as well that this post had only 14 views- I should state that I am a HUGE
PROPONENT of logical energy use - especially the use of LED lighting -my home is 99%
LED lit . What could have been sent out message wise is to buy QUALITY LED lighting
products. If you don't care about under performing LED luminiare - just buy anything,
but if you're a discerning LED consumer you will pay attention to both the radiometric
qualities of a LED lamp AND the photometric- ( the former the energy use metric the
latter is the metric pertaining to the quality of the illuminance and its inherent value.
I doubt any reading this would consider a sodium vapour lamps appalling glow
appropriate for a surgiical theatre or in a jewelry store. The point to be made is
that doing your due diligence prior to buying LED products is recommended, don't just buy the
cheapest ( unless its role is as an attic light) Many who will be buying a LED
product for the first time ( That's alot of people) would be well served to learn
who to discern what constitutes a well designed LED product . Learn how to
ask the questions , ask a vendor about - whose chip is being used - the mfg
& the model as well, learn to ask about the constant current driver , the
electrolytic capacitors used - Knowledge aboout the dimmabity - and
other functions will determine if there are compatibility issues with in
place switches and controllers.
By all means , migrate to solid state lighting- reap the benefits of LEDs minimal energy consumption-
But do the transition in a logical manner - buy the product well & the lighting issue should be stable
for a decade. But choose poorly and you could have a group of expensive paperweights.
