Duct Sealing for Comfort, Energy and Indoor Air Quality

WSU Extension Energy Program's Energy Experts provide this informative video on sealing your HVAC system ducts. This is an extremely cost-effective energy efficiency action that also improves indoor air quality. This video shows how ducts move air, where common leaks are, and shows how to fix them. The video is for building professionals or do-it-yourself homeowners. Even if you aren't planning to do the work yourself, this video shows why it is important to have it done.

Awesome video!  What are everyone's thoughts on the mastic based tapes for sealing joints?

David:

Excellent job on the video! Someone spent a lot of time on the supplemental graphics (Flash?) and it really paid off in a professional appearance of the finished product.

Glad to see use of a duct pressure test. Would have been informative to show before/after numbers.

About fiberglas being pulled into the system...have wondered what the effect is when that product accumulates on heat exchangers and evap coils. Can such accumulation be detected by a pressure drop reading across those elements? Guess one would need to begin with "clean" #'s , which might be hard to come by.

All my ducts are in the attic and a number of years ago an electrician (I'm blaming him ;-) stepped on a flex duct connection and seperated an 8" run. Did not discover the situation till design conditions the next cooling season, when the AC refused to pull the house below 90 on a 105 degree day. In addition to dumping supply air, the other open end of the duct was pulling in 130 degree attic air :-(.

Finally, have been feeling more friendly to crawl space encapsulation since I did my own last year. It's interesting to Google the subject and discover how CS's came about. Would seem a good idea to get all the ducts in your example house into the conditioned space (after a radon test, of course :-).

Again, excellent video.
