When comparing renewable energy sources to fossil-fuel energy, there is little competition; renewable energy will win. In the quest for an alternative energy source, water, wind and solar power emerge as the top choices. However, the competition between the three is stiff. With this being the case, which one is the best?

Solar

With solar power, the sun’s energy is used to generate electricity or heat. Once captured, solar energy is filtered and stored to provide power to homes, buildings, farms and virtually any other structure that requires electricity. Because it’s available for free, the only costs incurred involve the equipment needed to capture and store the energy. Offered by Lennox Solar Energy Solutions, solar power produces no emissions, making it an eco-friendly alternative.

Wind

Wind has been used for many years to power large factories, commercial buildings and other structures that require a consistent source of power. Wind turbines are quickly installed, cost-effective and require little maintenance. For power on a smaller scale, compact wind turbines handle the job nicely. The unfortunate downside to wind power is it is extremely site specific, meaning it needs to be placed in an open, airy environment to consistently produce energy.

Water

Otherwise called hydropower, energy created and stored from water is a much more complex process than other renewable energy sources. There are three ways to create energy from water, which include diversion, impoundment and pumped storage. All three of these options require steep costs to implement and, for an individual consumer, is not a practical option. When compared to other sources, hydropower is best used to provide electricity on a large scale.

A Combination

Some experts claim a combination of at least two energy sources is the best way to go. At times, solar power can supplement the power produced from traditional plants, which successfully prevents blackouts and brownouts. Unfortunately, choosing two energy sources is more expensive than choosing the best energy source.

The Winner

And the winner is solar! Why solar energy, you ask? It comes from an unending source (let’s face it, if the sun goes away there’s not much use for electricity), and doesn’t require an ongoing investment, like other renewable energy sources. Though solar is still growing in popularity, the future of sustainable energy lies in the ability to harness the sun’s power. Lennox Solar Energy Solutions provides a fantastic alternative to traditional fuel by implementing solar energy solutions.
