Hitting the Sweet Spot - The Intersection of Energy Efficiency, Home Performance and Health

Greetings:

This is my first post, so please forgive the lengthy background. Thanks for allowing my participation.

I operate the Healthy House Institute (HHI) and the Healthy Facilities Institute but entered green, healthy home education through the "backdoor" of facility cleaning.

Having cleaned buildings (or supervised cleaning) years ago in my youth, and experiencing ill-treatment as a lowly "cleaner"; I  became convinced cleaning is a noble field of preventative "healthcare", proactive stewardship of the indoor environment, and a metaphor for "green":

  • Clean Outdoors / Clean Earth (less carbon and other pollutants)
  • Clean Indoors (Clean air and water in homes and buildings)

Energy savings (and fiscal benefits) started the green home "conversation" but that discourse has now broadened to include home performance and health; i.e., the sweet spot.

I hope some of you will be attending the Healthy Homes Conference in Nashville (there is still time to register and attend) as I have the privilege of speaking about our BuildHealthy Project (in Boise) and would enjoy meeting with you. I understand HGTV and several home care heavyweights on the federal side will be attending, so it seems a good place to further discussion.

Home Energy magazine will be there "in spirit" and I will be handing out some of their magazines in hopes of igniting a conversation about the nexus of energy efficiency, home performance and home health.

Thanks.

Allen Rathey,

President HHI
