EPA Seeks Public Comment on Draft Environmental Protocols for Home Energy Upgrades

Hello All:

With so many HEP participants already being deluged with relevant (and sometimes irrelevant) information about the industry, it's difficult to decide when to add yet another layer by posting a press release such as this. For those who are top of this, forgive me. For those who aren't, and pretty much don't care, hope you'll forgive me too...

During my brief time with this group, I have come to very much respect the remarkable level of intelligence and knowledge displayed by all members and feel at least some of you may not be aware of opportunities like this to share that experience by commenting. The more cynical may think special interest groups and lobbyists dominate the process, but hey!, we're a special interest group too, so I encourage those so inclined to jump in.

One final thought, as a retired person with considerable time on my hands (plus no one can fire me for being outspoken), I find myself spending a lot of time here. I know many, if not most, are trying hard to find way's to support yourselves and your loved ones in these difficult times, as well as be a part of HEP and I appreciate that too. I'm sure someone will give me a "dope slap" if I get annoying...

Be well and here's where I find out if the hyper-links below work or you need to copy/paste, or worse yet, Google.

EPA Seeks Public Comments on Draft Environment Protocols for Home Energy Upgrades

November 19, 2010
Malta, NY, November 19, 2010 - The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is requesting public comments on a series of best practice protocols related to indoor air quality and occupant health when performing home energy retrofits. The draft document, Healthy Indoor Environment Protocols for Home Energy Retrofits, is intended to help ensure home energy retrofits include appropriate health protections. The period for public comment closes December 7, 2010.

The draft EPA protocols provide guidance on how best to address public health issues that can be affected by retrofit work, such as occupant exposure to moisture/mold, radon and lead, and the steps necessary to maintain or improve indoor air quality. Adoption of the EPA protocols is expected to help minimize the potential unintended health impacts of retrofit and remodeling activities.

BPI, as the nation's premier building performance standards setting organization, works to develop home retrofit health and safety standards that conform to the latest industry best practices based on sound building science. BPI collaborates with federal agencies, Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) practitioners and trainers, home performance contractors, building scientists and other stakeholders to develop technical standards using an open, transparent, consensus-based process.

The EPA protocols were part of an announcement made by Vice President Biden last week on a series of federal actions designed to build a stronger home energy retrofit market, increase energy efficiency and create savings for families across the country. The protocols complement the Department of Energy's Workforce Guidelines for Home Energy Upgrades. Together, the documents are intended to provide a practical set of resources for retrofit contractors, trainers, and program administrators.
