If you haven't been paying attention, LED's for the home are dropping in price like crazy.

I first put up a post on the best LED A19 bulb for 60-W and 40-W replacements with pricing pulled from Amazon.

But then Cree came out with their bulb and totally blew the field away.

You can see a comparison I put together at the bottom of this post.  When you factor in price, efficiency, and warranty, no other manufacturer comes close to what Cree is currently offering.

Are LEDs cheaper than CFLs?  Nope, not even close, but they're getting closer.

Plus, they don't contain mercury (no need for special recycling), their lifespan isn't shortened by frequent on/off (like my CFLs in my kitchen are with my occupancy sensor), and they will last much longer than CFLs.

I have 4 LED bulbs in my home, and I still use mainly CFLs, but my thinking has changed recently and I'm taking a much closer look at LED bulbs.  How about you?

David,

That is pretty surprising!  I would expect something like that from a CFL...but not from an LED bulb.  You think they'd figure out how to package something like that.  How did the ones you got that weren't broken work out?

Based on a couple of blog posts I read here, I decided to order some of the CREE 9w LED bulbs listed above. I ordered a package of 6 from Home Depot online, since I don't live anywhere near a store. The first shipment was back-ordered a while, and when they arrive, 3 of them where shattered INSIDE their packaging. OK, I thought, an odd occurrence, but let's try again. The replacement order arrived today, and 2 of them are broken. HD has been good about handling the replacements, but this is ridiculous. Probably oughta buy these in the store if you want to try them...

We are mostly LED now, although we do have a few incandescents lurking here and there, and I have (24) T8s in my shop. Previously we were mostly CFL, but they don't compare to LEDs, not even close. The cost of what I bought a year ago vs. the same stuff today... huge price drop. Oh well, I didn't think they would drop so suddenly.

I replaced 35 incandescent bulbs back in November 2012 and paid an average price of $25.28. Replaced many CFL and so far very satisfied with the results except for two issues: 1.) RF Interference (RFI) with my garage door opener see LED RFI, and 2.) bulb flicker with 4 recessed can lights in the living room on a 3-way dimmer. With other home/energy improvements our energy bill last month was less than $75 USD.
