I'm sure most of you have seen the commercials by US petroleum companies extolling the virtues of coal and natural gas. Did you notice that those ads only run on major news organizations TV and radio stations. Why is that?
It didn't really strike me until the recent record breaking heat waves across the US. I found it so odd that weather people don't even mention global warming despite the obvious connection.
My theory is that the petroleum ads are being run not just to influence the audience but to buy broadcaster silence on the issues of global warming and alternative energy. The amount of coverage and editorial content in those areas is non-existent, especially when compared to a few years ago. Our national news organizations have been silenced with ad revenues. Deplorable.
Please comment as this obviously is somewhat speculative but, I think, very plausible. I'd be interested in others feedback and observations.

Marketing people and advertising agencies run ads on the media where they think their target audience is.
There is a report which came out yesterday linking global warming to weather catastrophes. That doesnt make it necesssarily true, but it may be.
Broadcasters are not silent on global warming & alternative energy, except for Fox News knocking the issues.
Broadcasters sell ad space to the highest bidder, without attention to the bidder's outlook, paying close attention to FTC truth in advertising laws & rules.
There is no conspiracy, Virginia. Just a free market at work. Enjoy the freedom we have in the good old USA.
ps: I've sat in literally high-up advertising agency meetings in NY & technically edited and okayed petroleum company ads
