I don’t believe this is an industry specific issue but we do seem to have an excess of acronyms.
For example we have RESNET, HERS, BPI, LEED, CSG, ACCI, ANSI, OSHA, WISHA, OMG, & LMAO!
Confused yet? No – then let’s try these on for size… ACH50, ACHNAT, SIPS, DMHP, HP, WH, HVAC, CFM, ELA, SLA and IECC, MEC, ASHRAE but don’t forget NYC!
BTW can you name EPA, HERC, OSB, PVC, ABS, BD, DB, MDF, MDO, SEER, HSPF, HRV’s, ERV’s, DOE, NGBS, BIA, PV, UV, UVA, UVL, DHW, IAQ, Kwh, Mmbtu and just plain old BTU’s!
Still – maybe you live in one of these areas? PNW, EC, SW, NE, DS,
Wait we still have the basic building blocks of our businesses – CEO, CFO, COO, LLC, MGR, INC, QR, QC, QA, all which will eventually lead us to the AARP!
Just looking through the recent builder magazine and we find LCA, LCC’S, LED, CFL, GBI, EPD’S, ASTM, NAHB, IGCC which came about way before GEN X, or GEN Y.
Now 4COL we can wrap it up with the last couple (hahaha) ICF’S, TOD, ULC, MTC, HUD, REIT, COAC, FAX, NARI, NKBA, WBMA, LP, T&G, TDI, MDI, NYSE, NYSAR, GBC, MSA, CAR, GLVAR, LIRA, USA, US, APR, ABI, and last but not least THISWILLNEVEREND..!
I’m sure we have covered them all now! JK lol

Comment by Bud Poll on January 6, 2012 at 3:15am As much as I hate them, I also fall victim to using them. The solution is some software. A "mouse over" selection each time we type one, that lets the author quickly select which meaning applies as there are duplicates. When someone is reading and comes across one of these abbreviations, a quick mouse over would reveal the intended decoding and most of the aggravation would be gone. Let's see if the software experts take note.
