Why I am optimistic about the future of Energy Efficiency industry.

As I sit here typing I am for the in a long time optimistic about our industry. The crash and burn of PACE and subsequently Homestar left many of us wondering if our industry would ever make it to prime time.

I have new found optimism. I am actually excited. In the last month I have seen the following.

Vice President Biden and the news conference regarding Home Score. Agree with it or not it got press. It also…

Home Energy's associate editor gets published in the ASTM's "Standardization News"

In a shameless bit of self-promotion, I am excited to announce that me and my colleague-on-ground, Kevin Rowell were picked up by the ASTM's "Standardization News" in an article about the potential of re-introducing the vernacular building styles into Haiti's post-disaster housing crisis.

The article, entitled "Taking the Long View in… Continue

Let's Talk Preservation - Part 1

Every day, while traveling to or coming home from work, I hear an advertisement for new Energy Star homes under construction or ready for purchase. While I have the utmost respect for what Energy Star

certification stands for and hopes to accomplish, I don’t believe I could ever own one myself. Energy Star and other similarly accredited homes offer quite a bit in terms of energy efficiency, but in terms of lessening the homes impact on the environment…I’m not entirely…

Fluke TiR Featured in new Home Energy Auditing Commercial

Our TiR Thermal Imager was featured in the new Baltimore Gas & Electric home energy inspection commercial! We couldn’t be happier about seeing our signature Fluke-yellow imager featured in this commercial,

which began airing around the greater Baltimore area in late September.

For nearly 200 years, Baltimore Gas & Electric has been meeting the energy needs of Central Maryland, serving more than 1.2 million business and residential electric customers and more…

Taking the Home Energy Scoring Tool a Step Further

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) puts a great deal of focus and concern into the area of weatherization. An abundant amount of recovery act funding went towards weatherization and in return the reduction of energy consumption. In an attempt to make the auditing and assessing aspect of weatherization readily available and understood by both experts and consumers alike the DOE has created the Home Energy Scoring Tool.

This tool is available online for free and unlike similar…

Insulate Your !#@!$ Attic Hatch

My attic hatch insulation kit came in the mail this morning and I am very excited. Excited enough to go into a hot dusty attic to install it over the weekend.

I promised Michele that I will practice the Yoga of home improvement projects and keep the cursing down to a minimum. My home improvement projects usually involve some cursing. I worked part time as a janitor when I was in high school and that is where I…

Ice Dams and How To Prevent Ice Damming

excessive ice dam

Ice dams in Massachusetts are an ongoing nuisance and are causing extensive damage to soffit cavities, fascia boards, roof sheathing, gutters, and to the most outer portion of living area walls. This ice build-up can absolutely be alleviated, but every house tends to have a different situation as to why this ice dam is there in the first place. First, I'd like to explain how this massive ice mound forms on the most outer edge of your…

Energy efficiency: Real estate’s next granite counter top?

By Elisa Wood

A lot of good economic reasons exist to pursue energy efficiency. Still the average person tends not to. This is no surprise. If I cannot see, touch, buy, sell, trade or save efficiency, if it’s invisible, how can I pay it any real attention?

Often on the vanguard, Boston-based Conservation Services Group is working on an…

Green Jobs - Do They Have to Have a Color?

In this economy does it really matter what color our jobs are? Seriously. There are dark agents afoot. Lurking. Obstructing the possible creation of new jobs based on "green" technology or "green" principals (i.e. "work in agricultural, manufacturing, research and development (R&D), administrative, and service activities that contribute(s) substantially to preserving or restoring environmental quality...") at all costs. There is a green… Continue

It's Not All About The "R"

A few months ago I had lunch with a friend of mine who recently bought

an older historic home in southern Ohio. The subject of insulation and

heating costs came up and we engaged in a bit of a debate over what kind

of insulation to use. Now, I don’t believe either of us won, primarily

because I don’t think an ultimately right answer exists for the topic

we were debating. The topic you ask? “How big of a role does the

R-Value really play in insulation on an… Continue

Infrared (Thermal) Imaging Detects Radiant Ice Melt Systems

radiant ice and snow melt pipe detection

Ice and snow melt systems are utilized in many applications throughout the state of Massachusetts. Business owners utilize snow and ice melt systems in outdoor malls, parking lots, car washes, walkways, and loading ramps to eliminate the expense of continuous snowplowing, to avoid skidding of vehicles and to prevent slip-and-fall accidents on their property.
