Air Sealing Mobile Homes

We have been duct sealing manufactured/mobile homes for years and have had great success.  We are getting more and more requests to perform whole house air sealing in these homes.  I find that newer homes are already tight, and the older homes, well it seems we are just moving the leaks around.  With duct sealing we can almost always make significant reducitons, but reducing house infiltration has been much more challenging. Much of the challenge is that the actualy air barrier in the floor and…See More

Zonal Pressure Testing

I got into a discussion with a college the other day about testing the attic connection to the house. When the house is depressurized to -50pa wrt outside, and the attic wrt house is -49pa, isn’t the attic more “outside” then “inside”? When the house was depressurized to -50pa I also looked at the attic wrt outside, and got just -2pa. My understanding is that if the Blower Door is putting -50pa on the house interior, and the attic only goes -2pa wrt the outside, the ceiling is pretty darn…See More

Tools of the Trade

A hammer and a saw used to be the key tools for home contractors. Today, the best-in-breed also use high-tech equipment while performing a professional energy audit or verifying that construction has been done correctly.

Hey Zach, I like the "built it tight ventilate right" line, but I would add and the "IAQ will be outta site!" We spend so much time on build it tight syndrome, that we forget about materials and IAQ...

How much particle board, OSB, toxic glues and caulking does it take before we really understand the IAQ issues that we add with efficiency measures?

Thank you,
