Best house measuring tools...

Had my Bosch laser measuring tool crap out on me today as I was doing an energy audit. Got me thinking about maybe trying something else, specifically a measuring wheel, does anybody out there use one of these? Any suggestions? Or, if using a laser measuring tool, which one? Any better than others? I've had a really hard time measuring the outside of houses on bright days, trying to spot the laser a long ways off, thinking just rolling out the distance would be quicker!See More

"Hi Tony, It's no secret that there are an incredible number of laser measure tools, personal opinion, it is the brand are lagging most for! Because most can ALMOST the same, however, for example, the animal version of tools much better and much…"

"Hi Eric, I've always been pretty good at pacing off measurements, but I learned that energy auditing isn't about being accurate, but more about getting the same number other auditors would get.  When I first went chasing a HERS…"

"Old school is to pace it.   Walk next to yard stick or 100' tape, Then get use to it. Just count your steps If  you are  off  just round to close number.   Most new building are in 4' 8' 10' 12'…"

"That would work but may I suggest one tweak - add at least another 1" piece under the first (offsetting seams from above) going from 1 web to the next also foaming all edges / seams. That should help eliminate any chances of any air leakage…"

"Thanks for the reply David! Rigid foam on the top probably would have been simplest, however I do already have my metal roofing up… Have you had any experience with this approach? Do the panels get screwed to the roof? Joints taped?"

"Thanks for the reply Bud! I replied to Sean above, what do you think of the idea of having no vent channel, instead having 2 inch foam pressed up under the roof deck with 12" cellulose below that? "

"If there's not roofing installed yet, I would add rigid foam to the top of the roof deck, add tall fascia boards to match, install the roofing, and then dense-pack the rafter bays with no venting. "
