T-stats without fan-only control

When the air handler is only used for heating, they often don't have a fan-only control.  That's a problem for setting up the house in worst case conditions for combustion safety because the leaks in…Continue

One can learn the basics of heat transfer, R values, U values, and all that stuff reasonably quickly and the physics and and fundamentals apply in every house.  But the mechanical equipment can be a…Continue

"One of the local large (3-400 a year) national builders specializes in houses over about 3500 ft2 and on up to about 6500 ft.  They found that if they installed a humidifier on each system as standard (either 2 or 3 systems) their floor…"

IECC 2012

Massachusetts is supposed to adopt the 2012 IECC by July or August, 2013.  When that occurs, ceiling insulation will go to 49, basement or crawl space walls will be at 15 continuous or 19 cavity, and blower door testing will be required.  House tightness increases from 7 ACH50 to 3 ACH50.  That is pretty tight.  Post construction duct tightness goes from 12% Total leakage to 4% Total leakage.  The rough in tightness with no air handler goes from 4% to 3%.I just tested a small addition this…See More

Looking for a cure for a warping hardwood floor not caused by a leak

I have a client who is has a lovely house built in 2010 that has oak hardwood floors throughout. There are apparently no other moisture issues besides the hardwood flooring. This problem is on the third floor and the house has hardwood on all three floors. The owner is noticing that the first floor is starting to have the same problem. Important to note that the third floor warping is directly in the middle of the floor and runs the length of the third floor. The house has an open staircase…See More
