John Nicholas replied to Barry NewDelman's discussion Whats the Consensus of this group Define "Energy Efficiency" in the group Energy Efficient Design
"There are many ways of saving energy.   I can turn down the thermostat and put on a sweater.  or use a programmable and ignore the setting by wearing more clothes.  My bill drops a number of BTUs. I can take a military shower.…"

"Follow Up on 787 cfm at 25 total leakage. Ted, 1425 sf conditioned space. The systems were installed with no tape or mastic used. This model had sheet metal trunks with sheet metal take offs; in the basement ceiling / main floor truss system.…"

John Nicholas replied to Sean Lintow Sr's discussion Duct Testing - is a change in order? in the group Best Practices (Residential)
"My understanding of duct leakage per sqft of conditioned floor area came out in Energy Star 3.0. The size adjustment factor, the penalty for oversizing homes with the use of a Target HERS Score were ways of making builders look at downsizing homes.…"

John Nicholas replied to Kari Sauder's discussion raised ranch heating, can't balance it in the group HVAC
"Kari,  Your air sealing has brought the home down from 7.6 ACH @ 50 to 5.5 ACH @ 50.  Nice gain.  Almost meets Energy Star.  You can get it lower, gains from this point will be effective with more effort.  Get some IR images…"

John Nicholas replied to Kari Sauder's discussion raised ranch heating, can't balance it in the group HVAC
"You've spent time air sealing and doing good work.  You seem to have the equipment in line.  What about the rest of the thermal enclosure.  Do you know what insulation there is?  Especially in the basement area. I get calls…"

John Nicholas replied to Bud Poll's discussion Calculating attic ventilation
"Bud,  I know you believe every house is a unique structure and worth individual attention. If you have a 900 sf ranch with a full basement, or 1800 sf conditioned space. ca 1965.  No vaults etc. The 1:300 is 3 sf of attic ventilation.…"

John Nicholas replied to Bud Poll's discussion Calculating attic ventilation

John Nicholas replied to scottscontracting's discussion Is my HVAC Guy correct? 2 systems instead of 1 system with Dampers
"If you are looking at any kind of an EEM for residential property, you will need a HERS Rater. If the existing flex is not well installed, replace.  If outside the envelope, buy R-8 insulation. If on the ceiling plane, bury the ducts in your…"

John Nicholas replied to Sean Lintow Sr's discussion Duct Testing - is a change in order? in the group Best Practices (Residential)
"I can see the advantages of duct surface area!  I also disagree with leaving the equipment out of the equation.   The only way to get the surface area will require reporting to the AHJ. BTW:  I tested a duct system 3 weeks ago.…"

John Nicholas replied to Bud Poll's discussion Calculating attic ventilation
"Bud,  Read the book.  Rose never found any research regarding attic height. He only found cross ventilation. He didn't find 1:300 or 1:150 in anything research wise.  He found the first mention of 1:300 in the 1942 guidelines.…"
