Tools of the Trade

A hammer and a saw used to be the key tools for home contractors. Today, the best-in-breed also use high-tech equipment while performing a professional energy audit or verifying that construction has been done correctly.

Thanks Diane,

I'm new to this site and I'm not computer savvy. I got a question for you.

A contractor just installed a sump pump with a french drain to waterproof an unfinished section of my basement. He used a waffle board along the walls to prevent any leak from the walls. I would like to finish this section of my basement but i"m not sure how to make my first floor joint air tight and at the same time ventilate the basement floor in case of radon gas. Where should I go for advises on this?

Thanks.

John

Thx Diane,

Don’t know Sean Lintow of Best Practices, though I know Matthew Redmond.  I want to ask you the same question I asked Matt:

I fear EFFECTIVE is something that may be overlooked as people suppose BEST PRACTICES are sufficient (necessary, yes . . . sufficient, no).   Will EFFECTIVE get lost in Best Practices, especially as regards doing effective air seal and insulation?

Seems like insulators need a spot to share their solutions to problems, much as occurs at heatinghelp.com.  Wife Cheryl and I do lots of follow-up inspections & here’s how we see the “Real World of Install” :

In our audit and follow-up independent guidance, and more-so looking at work people have had done before we are on-site, we estimate that, on average, people get about 70% of what is being paid for in programs that include an audit and follow-up inspection, and less than 70% of what is being bought in private work, outside of programs.  It's hard to figure out a percentage since some work is completed as agreed  but done poorly, some partly done, and in some cases payment is made for work that is entirely missing.   From the installers view I think we'd venture the biggest problem of having something less, or different than what the installer bills for is simply reality: it’s difficult to "ace" air seal and insulation work.

Also, I’m bizi & want to know what’s involved w/ a group.  Once started, what does the “starter” do?
