Bryce Cramer replied to Mike Kandel's discussion June's Stump the Chump: What's Wrong with this Picture? in the group Building Performance Institute (BPI)
"Key is this was done in warm weather. The back wall of the room was also uninsulated, but the lower portion was against the air-conditioned envelope of the home. The red area above was against the attic area, causing the increase in temperature."

Bryce Cramer replied to allen p tanner's discussion The end of profits for Auditors/raters
"David Would you take your car to a local mechanic in a garage in his back yard to make repairs? That's the analogy your attempting to use. I doubt many would take their complex new technology vehicles to such a repair place. In fact, as cars…"

Bryce Cramer commented on Leah Thayer's blog post What's Wrong with These Pictures? A Contest
"Photo 1 has way more jack studs than required. Photo 2 is under-insulated in the one rafter cavity. Photo 3 someone left an unsealed hole in supply duct. Photo 4, valley is running into side of house. Photo 5, wood facia is running into roofing…"

Bryce Cramer replied to allen p tanner's discussion The end of profits for Auditors/raters
"This would be a great tool for the home I was auditing yesterday. Probably tell them to seal the ductwork and the like, insulate walls, crawlspace, etc. Same things I did. But, oh....by the way, would it tell them they had a life/safety situation in…"

sealed soffits near fan exhaust

"Not sure if I understand how sealing the flow of air through the soffit will reduce ice damns. The better approach would be to stop the heat loss through the attic floor with a better insulation job. Then provide proper ventilation so that the roof…"

Crawlspace Condensation

Yes, that is condensation on the fiberglass batts, both those installed correctly, and those incorrectly. This was a brand new home. The contractor sprayed the crawlspace perimeter with closed cell polyurethane foam, put fiberglass in the floor…

Bryce Cramer replied to Jamie Kaye's discussion Spray Foam vs. Fiberglass - R-value only?
"They flat missed this area (was done after s-rock was installed), as well as a similar area in another bedroom. They also had a lot of "seam" issues."

Bryce Cramer replied to Jamie Kaye's discussion Spray Foam vs. Fiberglass - R-value only?
"I'm a firm believer quality of installation is key to the effectiveness of any insulation. To say that one is better than another is not being fair to those that do a quality job of installing and giving credit to those that do poor…"

Bryce Cramer replied to Jamie Kaye's discussion Spray Foam vs. Fiberglass - R-value only?
"Carl I don't believe you will find condensation on the wood sub-floor due to absorption. For example, take a block of wood and put it in your refrigerator along with a can of soda (or beer if you prefer). Take them out after a while and observe…"
