Heat Escaping Building Envelope - Image Courtesy of Fluke Corporation - ©2010

An infrared image of heat transferring through the building envelope to the cooler, outside environment. Heat will always flow from "hot to cold"... via conduction and/or convection... through wall cavities with missing insulation... through the framing members... through the roof structure... through the concrete foundation... through the vents... through the windows... through the window panes... and through the chimney.... but at different rates. It is the job of the buiding science professional to understand what can be done to minimize this heat loss as much as possible and practical in cooler climates.
