Thanks for starting this thread, Bret!

I've been an iPhone user for years, after a brief BlackBerry experience.

The iPhone is really powerful and admittedly fun to use!

From what I see and read, there is a LOT of acceptance of the iPhone in the business and corporate world, but it would be great to hear from those in the trenches.

So as they say in Maine: "The proof is in the pudding!"

(That saying did come from Maine? Didn't it?)

Hey Bill-

A lot of things started in Maine and pudding is probably one of them! Energy Auditing was not far behind because it's a bit chilly up here from time to time!

Would like to hear from auditors and if/how they currently use this i-phone/i-pad connectivity technology in the field so we can gauge the usefullness of this wi-fi link with the IR imager! The new imagers themselves are powerful from the IR application capabilities, so we are viewing this connection as the next link in speeding up reports if you will. I have some other ideas to share but we'll see what our field folks have to say about this new feature.

Hey Brett,

I've been using an iPad to collect audit data for the last 6 mos. or so. It's great to be able to move that info easily to my laptop. I'd love to hear more about how I could create reports right in the field.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you but with ACI national and trainings, I've been traveling for 3 weeks straight.

I appreciate the info and great to know these wonderful time saving devicies are being integrated into the field work more commonly now! I'm a Blackberry guy and just recently purchased the iPad to see how it may help the audit process and am receiving great threads here about what is going on in the field. Give me a call to discuss further or if you wanted to and are using a FLIR imager currently, download the free "FLIR Viewer" application from the Apple App Store. You won't be able to wi-fi connect an older imager with your i-Pad, you have to have one of the new FLIR E series imagers, but you can probably import images to try it out. There is also a Professional version that is $29.99 that allows you to create these reports I mentioned. look forward to talking with you!

Bret...
I use an IPad to take notes during any event or inspection or audit.
It has completely replaced my clipboard with legal pad attached.
For energy audits, it has also replaced my calculator and more importantly, I have set up Excel spreadsheets to do more complex calculations such as Building Airflow Standard.
I also have an 85 question survey/questionnaire D-I-Y excel spreadsheet with 3 worksheets that I give to my clients to fill out which automatically produces a 15 page report that I can save as a PDF and email to them right from the IPad.
The IPad can do 3G web access so any software that runs on a web browser (Microsoft HOHM for energy audits) can be done on it.... I can email that report too Frn the IPad.
The new IPad 2 has cameras so I can take pictures with it dorectly or upload photos from my regular camera or my IR camera into it and use them in reports.

One DC energy auditing company,EcoHouse, takes an iPad to do energy audits and inspect the retrofit measures right on the job site.   They use Hancock's software HEAT.  The iPad2's camera takes photos of the measures.  A home energy report of SIRs, MMBTU savings and projected lifetime savings can be generated right on the job site.   They say it eliminates all of the office-time for the auditors creating energy modeling reports.  I

We recently purchased an E Series FLIR camera and will be purchasing an iPad shortly. I am interested in using Home Gauge to help streamline the auditing process, but they currently don't have an iPad ap. Any other software available that is iPad compatible? Or is everyone using home grown Excel sheets?

I have been using an iPad for data collection on Audits for 6 months.

 

I use a free software program for RE and Appraisers from Ala Mode called Total.  It does the footprint and other measurements.  I get a scaled drawing.

 

I use forms customized by a FM database for other data collection.  I have adjusted the original paper forms to the iPad format so I no longer have to zoom etc to enter.  Just page down as the audit progresses.   These go through Drop Box to iAnnotate.  A paid PDF annotation program.

 

Most of the rest are less used programs.  I have a sound meter for Bath Fans.  A couple of sketch programs for specific elevations or vaults.  I have a GPS Note Program that allows me to put a pin on the address of each audit.  Nice map of where I've been. I do see some geographical patterns.  Compass.  I use the photo program on the iPad for displaying stuff (good and bad) that I've run into.  I have a simple SS program on the iPad that will run some field calcs on Blower Door Data if needed.  QR code reader. Weather program to pick up outside temps. Mostly free stuff.

 

I just added an iPhone this week. My BB died.  So have to see how that works in.
