We are planning an energy audit in southern Wisconsin on a mid-rise building where every apartment has a self-contained Anderson "Magic Pak" HVAC unit. These are a combo NG furnace/package AC ducted forced air system, set into a three foot by four foot grille in an exterior wall for condenser cooling and furnace exhaust.

Since these buildings are in a heating-dominant climate, getting good SSE readings on the existing units is important to me. The furnace exhaust ports out a short tube through the grille directly to outdoors. I think we can test the first floor units from outdoors -- the results seem to vary a little depending on just where the combustion probe in in the exhaust stream.

Does anyone know how we could test second-floor (and higher) units without humping a ladder all the way around the building?? Anyone have literature or experience drilling into the exhaust stream somewhere from the building side of the unit?
