BPI's Multifamily Energy Auditing Standard Released for Public Comment

 Now open for public comment through December 2, 2013

Malta, NY, October 18, 2013 - The Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI) is pleased to announce that BPI-1105-S-201x: Standard Practice for Multifamily Energy Auditing is now available for public comment for a period of 45 days.

 

BPI-1105-S-201x: Standard Practice for Multifamily Energy Auditing defines the minimum criteria for conducting a building-science-based evaluation of existing multifamily buildings and provides specific technical procedures to conduct a multifamily building energy audit.

 

"The new Multifamily Energy Auditing Standard builds upon the strong foundation of the Multifamily Building Analyst Standard, but is far more expansive in scope and aims to address building types and systems that are found in every region of the country," said Andrew Brooks, chair of the BPI working group that developed the standard and director of the Association for Energy Affordability's west coast operations. "The new standard also incorporates many updates to reflect current best practices and relevant advances in technology."

 

The scope of the energy audit will include an on-site evaluation of the residential units, common area public spaces and all central building systems affecting energy use in the residential space, and will address energy usage and limited aspects of building durability and occupant health and safety. The on-site evaluation will provide a comprehensive report with a list of prioritized recommendations to improve the building and will include a cost-benefit analysis of all proposed measures.

 

BPI-1105 was developed by a working group created by BPI's Multifamily Standards Technical Committee (MSTC) and comprised of subject matter experts representing a broad variety of interest categories and geographical locations.

 

This standard is currently undergoing American National Standards Institute (ANSI) review, which includes a 45-day public comment period as defined under BPI's standards development process. Comments are being solicited from stakeholders and the general public.
