Found this in the basement of our recent purchase.  Only thing worse than one long horizontal vent is two.  Our HVAC guy looked at the big blob of white cement at the chimney breech and said, "That's scary".  Fortunately the price was right and we will be putting a 95% AFUE sidewall vented unit in for a replacement. (And a power vented WH).

You didn't even need a level to show the negative slope on those.  Wow!  Scary Indeed! The only thing worse would be disconnected before the chimney - and these might have been!

Look on the bright side... you could have gotten this: http://inspectorsjournal.com/forum/pop_img_preview.asp?usersImgPath...

yep --people get creative with their venting options-- thanks for sharing.

you made a good purchase.   With a stone/brick chimney takes a 50-60,000 BTU/hr to keep the draft up.  Look at the top of furnace full of rust and drips its not drafting

I don't think there was much of a draft.  The tops of both furnace and WH were pretty rusty.  But then the furnace had not been used in a while probably b/c there were two kerosene cans in the yard -- can anyone say orphaned water heater?  But then there were so many bypasses (no sheeting on the house above the porch ceilings & balloon framing basement to attic) that the plumbing inside the house was not safe from freezing so the CO probably didn't have too much chance to stay!  This week temps dipped below zero here and we were forced to take some hours in the basement for air-sealing -- band joist on a stone foundation = $80 of spray foam.  Already brought the temp of the basement up 20 deg. (heating with elec. space heaters last month was expensive-- can't hardly wait for the HVAC guy to get here with the gas furnace)

YIKES! I'm glad you got that fixed up.
