I was performing a WAP test-out when I found this.  The insulation contractor didn't install baffles and didn't know enough that you can't cover up flame intakes with insulation.

 

From another WAP audit, this time a test-in.  I actually said, "Wow!" when I entered the kitchen.  The owner's adult daughter told me, "I've always grown up with hot water heater in the kitchen."  Notice the backdrafting marks on the floor.

Did they actually paint some of the water piping, gas line, and venting white?  And what's the discoloration on top of the hood?  It looks burned.  You have to wonder at the backdrafting potential with this set-up.

Yep, they painted them white, to fit with the decor.

 

As for the kitchen vent hood, yes, looks burned.  I didn't pay too much attention to it because it didn't have a vent and it didn't work anyway.  BTW, I was standing under the access to the attic when I took the picture.  It was right over the kitchen table. Weird.

How was the gas stove for CO?  What about the hood?  Vented to the attic or outside?  Did it work?
CO was in within limits set forth by the state.  There was not venting in the stove hood.  There was no electricity leading to the hood.  My recommendation was to move the hot water heater to a its own custom made shed outside.
