For those of you who may not have made it to the 2011 Habitat for Humanity Affiliate Conference in Atlanta this week... it was phenomenal!   Excellent sessions and conversations all week long!   It's really heartening to see the great things that Habitat is doing around the world and the things that they are now doing to advance the use and awareness of cutting-edge building science methods and materials in creating affordable, sustainable homes for so many!

Thanks for setting up this group. I am the rater on three Habitat homes in Northern Michigan. The first was Energy Star (HERS 63), the second was Energy Star & NGBS (HERS 59), the third under construction may reach LEED Platinum. What great leadership HHI and the local HH groups show our communities by building energy efficient homes.

James, Habitat has made great strides in greening their new homes, and they recently started doing the same with renovations. They've declared that by 2013, all their new homes will get the ENERGY STAR label. See the article I posted a link to in the discussions above for a little more detail. Kevin Gobble, who started this group is, I believe, their head guy. I've known him for a few years now, from the time we both worked at Southface in Atlanta, and he's really committed to making sure that Habitat builds high performance, affordable homes.

James, while I can't speak for HHI, in the article I referenced below, the author states that "In December 2007, Habitat issued guidelines asking all of its affiliates to build homes that meet Energy Star efficiency standards and in 2009 it will begin requiring affiliates wishing to receive grants from the main organization to meet Energy Star criteria."

I have a question. Are there national EE standards for Habitat housing? Statewide? Or is every local group responsible for itself? I recently heard a good presentation about a Habitat group in eastern Iowa that had established some specific energy efficiency standards for their homes; my experience working with another group here in central Iowa was that a lot of this depends on the local coordinator in charge and his/her own knowledge and interest.

Home Energy published an article about Habitat for Humanity of Lakeland, Florida in our Mar/Apr 2009 issue, which is available free online by clicking here. Many RESNET certified raters have expressed interest in volunteering with Habitat through a national RESNET community service project (see “Raters Offer Time and Talent to Habitat for Humanity,” HE Jan/Feb ’09, p. 8)
