Modeling Domestic Hot Water Systems
This discussion forum is to attempt to answer Steve's question regarding better ways to model domestic hot water systems. Here is his question.
"Things appear rather quiet over here in Building Simulations, so I thought I might stir up some discussion on the subject of DHW storage temps, as they apply to dishwasher usage. Cruise on over to "Top-10 just launched" on the home page under Forums and go down to "comments" where J.C. and I went somewhat off topic with a discussion of DHW temps. I'm reasonably sure simulations would support maintaining DHW @ 115-120 F, and using electric heat in the DW to boost the temp as the most energy efficient approach, but have found no difinitive study. I suspect this issue has been settled, but would appreciate your thoughts and the results of any simulations you may have run or encountered. "

Perhaps time to put this situation aside and move on. While I never did locate a rigorous study, the sheer volume of information advocating booster electric heat in the dishwasher vs maintaining a higher DHW storage temp would seem to support the former as the preferred approach. I believe Energy Star DW's use less than 10 gallons of dihydrogen monoxide and the delta T should be on the order of 20-25 degrees, so probably no big deal...unless your fuel source is dollar bills.
Still, would have liked to see results from running a "what if" program... -
