In case you did not know, ORNL, DOE & a team of researchers called the NorthernStar team got together to hash out some new guidelines for the Northern area of the country regarding window performance, foundation & basement best design practices.
Michael Anschel was one of those involved & tweeted about it extensively and allowed me to pull it together into a transcript. There are quite a few best practices in the transcript & a look at what the current thinking is & issues they are still hashing out.

http://www.ornl.gov/sci/buildingsfoundations/handbook/ is the foundation handbook they were using, but a quick word from Michael - "every diagram is wrong" so be forewarned (I have not had a chance to review them - but based on the transcript above, I would agree that using some caution is paramount)
