I just recently received an update of energy use over a 4-year period from Ward Lutz, one of the first projects to meet the 1000 Home Challenge. Ward met the 1000 Home Challenge in 2010, after he completed a deep energy retrofit of his modest home in Urbana,OH. That was just the beginning. He has continued to invest and monitor and learn and share the results. The year after he met the 1000 Home Challenge he added PV and a ductless heat pump, and has achieved net zero energy site energy ever since.

Posted under Ward's case study is a spreadsheet summarizing 4+ years of energy production, use, and net since the PV array was installed. His annual use has ranged from 4.9 to 7 kWh/day. Ward's net energy average use has ranged from +3.9 to +4.1 kWh/day.

Ward has been willing to experiment, and is committed to making sure that he has feedback so he can evaluate and learn from the results The "outdoor unit" of his ductless heat pump is located in his crawl space - a space that is insulated with R-40 between the the crawl and living space. Data from both a cooling and heating season is posted - What better way to warm up (and dry out) a crawl space in the summer than to run the AC?

Check out the case study, and presentation given at Data Not Dogma, as well as his home's performance data.
