Congrats Bill Turner - 27th Project (1st in Maine) to Officially Meet the 1000 Home Challenge!

Check out 1) Attached energy use bar chart - 80% reduction of 2011-12 use.2)  Updated case studies: www.thousandhomechallenge.org/collaborators

Two things inspired Bill Turner’s journey on the path to deep reductions in his home in Harrison, Maine.

1)      He  got tired of using six cords of wood, (plus propane), to heat his home

2)      He discovered the 1000 Home Challenge.

Since 2012 he has addressed air leakage and insulation with “strategic dense pack” through Curry Caputo and his company Sustainable Structures, installed two ductless heat pumps and a heat pump water heater, overhauled a twenty-year old solar hot water system, tackled his electric baseload, and added a 7 kW solar photovoltaic array.

In the coldest Maine winter in many peoples' memory, his home’s 2014-15 energy use met his Thousand Home Challenge threshold. This is particularly impressive since the 1000 Home Challenge does not adjust for short-term variations of weather.  Bill Turner’s home is the 1st project in Maine, and the 27th in the US & Canada to officially meet the 1000 Home Challenge.

He is not done yet. Stay tuned to see how low he can go.
