RESNET has set up standards for Infrared Camera certifications for their Raters. The standards are going to go into effect after the 2011 RESNET conference in Orlando in February. Specifice training requirements have to be met to include certified standards in ASNT, testing to include 3 thermal imaging reports that will be graded. A simple smoke test will no longer be acceptable; this will raise the level of competance and reporting on their audits.

Hello

Having inspectors meet the training, experience, and testing requirements of RESNET and ASNT will help to insure high quality inspections. Infrared cameras are easy to use and even easier to misuse. Without training it may be difficult to understand what the image actually means.

Hi,

I believe this will just add to the already mounting costs of doing business, especially when business is slow. I for one cannot afford the cost of another certification . A simple 3 hour course for a couple of hundred bucks and an inexpensive camera will sure suffice for what the most of us needs. My two cents, can't afford more.

Hello Paul

I understand your concern with cost in times like these. However, there are things that "you don't know that you don't know" and without training you have to learn them the hard way by making mistakes. Also, certification may help you get jobs over someone who does not have certification. I have been using infrared for 15 years and I still run into images that confound me.

Good luck and I hope business picks up.

Hi,

I understand where you are coming from, but where is it going to end? Next a certification to read a boroscope? I'm a home performance contractor with energy star, lead certified,OSHA certified with a BA, Envelope and Multi Family Certificates. How much more credibility does one need? As far as I'm concern an infrared camera definitely has it's uses, but it is partly a marketing tool.
