Good morning all,

We had a question come up on "shielding insulation." The description is as follows: 

"The Universal Shielding Insulation is used to reduce cold air infiltration into the dwelling and to provide additional protection against radiant heat from the chimney or venting system."

That description is vague enough to make me very skeptical--radiant barrier skeptical. Has anyone encountered this and able to validate or invalidate its usefulness?

A bunch of marketing terms is all that it sounds like - without specs or anything else to discuss we are only guessing. As for dispelling myths & bad marketing terms, I do it all the time while trying not to give any link or seo love to the offenders by explaining what a radiant barrier really does, etc...

It does not ring a bell.

Wait...it does, an alarm bell.

Anything, insulation, equipment, material that does give stats in industry standards, in this case, R, U, or even "equals --- inches of fiberglass", up front, readily accessible in seconds, should be relegated to the bottom of the stack of papers you'll get to "someday". 

Physics pretty much determines what makes insulators work, and short of layering alternate realities in between two layers of craft paper, we are unlikely to see any "new" forms of insulation.  Hmmmm, or would that just bleed heat between realities?????

Well, it's part of Selkirk's chimney or venting package, and "may be installed within an Attic Insulation Shield, a Wall Thimble or a Cathedral Ceiling Support" as  a way to reduce air leakage at that nastiest of places: where a chimney leaves the building envelope and must be separated from combustible materials which must be protected against radiant heat. For that use, it is both UL and Warnock Hersey listed. It's not meant for anything else. End of story. It's not a scam, rip off or bubble wrap silver bullet.
