As we near the 1000-member mark, we can all revel at the high level of member engagement: 94 Blog entries, 79 Forum posts, 372 photos, 66 videos, 25 topical groups, a coast-to-coast Events calendar with something happening almost every day .... and hundreds of posts in response to these items. Even more impressive than the sheer numbers is the super-high quality of the members' contributions.

All this in only 90 days.

It's a good moment to reach out and invite all of you to weigh in about what's working, what isn't, and what new features or functionality you'd like to see.  We'll read each and every reply to this post and fold your feedback into our future planning for Home Energy Pros.  Here are some of the things you might want to share your thoughts on:

  • Are the Guidelines for engagement clear, complete, and sensible?
  • Are there any major new modules you'd like to see in addition to Training, Events, Videos, Photos?
  • Are the ways we're accommodating commercialism (through topical groups, like News & Announcements, HEP Member Discounts, and Job Board doing the trick?
  • Any key Group topics missing?
  • Too much/little correspondence from us?
  • Any other suggestions you may have....

Let us know what you think, and don't pull any punches!

We look forward to your feedback.

Thanks,

~ Evan Mills & the rest of the Home Energy Pros team

We've gotten great suggestions from members which we've incorporated into the site including:

  • Ed Voytovich's suggestion (the first day!) that we add a LinkedIn field to member profiles.
  • Anne-Marie Peracchio's request for advanced search options so members can locate others by State/Country.
  • Great feedback from David Eggleton on Guidelines.

Thanks to member feedback, we've added these groups to serve community needs:

  • Job Board
  • HEP Member Discounts
  • News & Announcements
  • Home Energy Pro Tweets

Let us know what else you'd like to see. We're listening!

where do we access the LinkedIn field on our profile? I can't find that feature on my page.

Hi Gary,

To edit your profile information, sign in and click on the "Settings" link in the member account module (under your name in the upper right). This will take you to your profile settings where you'll find the field to add your LinkedIn info.

I think the site is wonderful already.  I think it would be good service to categorize content (I believe ning enables it) so that members can more easily spot new/marginal business opportunities.  Funding/payment for energy efficiency is almost always hard-won and situational, so it behooves all here to increase resilience by finding additional ways to participate with our values.

Thanks David.

Along these lines, we've been thinking about adding tags more systematically to the visual content.  We'll look into additional ways to index or otherwise organize things.

A new member asks, "Is there a Wiki type glossary specific to building science, home performance, passive solar, etc.?"

Great idea! We'll look into this.

There isn't one that I know of. I built one for personal use. It has initially the BPI standards and some other issues. It's a wiki on my local computer, but it could reside on a server for public access.
Several members reported spam last week and we've decided to change the way we accept members in order to keep the spammers out. Going forward, when a new person signs up, we will review their profile page before accepting them as members. Since only members can post content on Home Energy Pros, this will help keep our community free of spam.

I really like the site. It is clean and easy on the eyes

I do not like the thumbs up and thumbs down. Seems a bit more for social network sites and not professional network sites. This is more of a personal preference on my part.

Posts should not have the ability to block comments from other members.( this happened to only one post I replied to) As a professional  forum I would expect a level of respect however there will be at time differing views.

Gene, Thanks for your comments about the thumbs up/down. We appreciate your feedback.

Regarding posts: Posts do not have the ability to block comments from other members.  Please let me know if your comments are not showing up. There have occasionally been bug issues that caused problems with posts. We report these to technical support and they are responsive to getting the problem fixed.

Members have asked about having some of the great video content available on podcast. We're looking into the best way to do this.
Glen - we took your advice.  The thumbs are history.
