A few years ago I was shopping for some sort of data logging electrical system monitor and came across some really interesting solid state units that could monitor supply and usage over time. They had a USB interface that would allow them to be plugged into a laptop to download the data for analysis. Does anybody here know of such an animal? I would think that this sort of tech would be becoming very affordable and available but just don't know where to look.

Thanks, this is proving very fruitful. I have a lot to learn but this will get me started in the right direction.

We put an extensive Powerhouse Dynamics system in a deep energy retrofit house in Las Vegas

It does a good job of presenting discrete energy usage at the circuit breaker level. And that's the rub as well, because often circuits combine several appliances such as lighting and a dish washer or refrigerator...With a little effort it is possible to isolate an appliance, however.

In the case of this house, we were able to rewire and isolate the circuits so they actually isolate most of the appliances and lighting.
