I've noticed my new furnace uses about the same electrical power to operate as my old furnace, even though the new furnace (44k) is 1/2 the BTU of he old one (88k). Both furnaces use 1/3HP 5amp blower motors, old furnace was on high speed, new furnace was on low. New furnace uses a 1.8amp shaded pole inducer motor and is considerably larger than my previous furnace inducer. I didn't get the amp rating on the old furnace inducer, but it was a standard 'c frame' motor, most are about 1amp. Condensing furnaces do tend to use much larger inducer motors overall.

I write this post because I've noticed the increased electrical consumption with lower temperatures. Electrical efficiency isn't mentioned in furnace specs, but it appears to contribute considerably to operation costs.

Have you looked into any of the ECM motors? I hear they consume less electricity. It would probably take a couple years to pay for itself in savings, but with a new furnace, it may be worth looking into.


This motor looks like a good bet.

ECM could be the way to go. At $250 it does have a long payback though. The use of a 1.8A Shaded Pole inducer motor seems wasteful, a PSC would use 1/2 the power to do the same job.
