In her talk at EIA 2011 Kathleen Hogan said that it will be available nationally in the fall. I had the impression that DOE wants it to be a part of every state's Home Performance with Energy Star program.

On November 9, 2011 DOE announced the Program and released a test version of the asset-based analysis tool for calculating the score.

A set of nine pilot projects were then launched across the country. These were just recently concluded.

The results from the pilots are being analyzed and used to formulate a set of improvements to the tool and Program.

The Program will likely be launched nationally in late Fall, but an exact date has not been set.

It's very frustrating when we have these big announcements and then, nothing. Getting any kind of information has been extremely difficult. I'm glad to know the DOE hasn't abandoned the program entirely. This program was touted as one of the great achievements of the "Recovery through Retrofit" program. That may have been a bit premature. I hope the DOE releases their findings soon because it will be interesting to see how many homes have been scored.  I'm skeptical but hopeful.

John -

An extended team of people has been working quite hard on this. While we would all like to see these things move rapidly, a lot of effort is involved, including development of the rating methodology and tool, plus 9 disparate Pilot locations and delivery models. To my knowledge, the various milestones have actually been met on time thus far.

I believe about 1000 homes have been scored in the Pilots, which finished up, as scheduled, a couple of weeks ago

Developing a brand new web-based  energy analysis tool (http://homeenergyscore.lbl.gov)  is no small task, not to mention all of the program design that wraps around that. You can learn a bit about the calculation methodology here:

There have been a series of well-attended public conference calls for people who want to be kept up to date.  Send email to homeenergyscore@ee.doe.gov with questions and/or to get on the list for future calls.

Evan,

 

Thank you for your response. It’s not my intention to be a wet-blanket but it seems they are trying to reinvent the wheel. HES Pro has been available for some time and the pilots may seem disparate to you, but without California, the South-west, Florida, the South, the mountain West; it just doesn't seem very representative to me. I'm still hopeful but skeptical.

Posted Monday, but doesn't provide much information.

I hate to speculate, but my thoughts are that we will have to rise above this quick and easy scoring system and provide the home owners with a complete analysis specific to their home.

 

Not throwing eggs, but when contractors are left on their own without close oversight, many will fall victim to the profit motivations and let the details slide.  Not all, but many.  The task for the independent energy auditor will be to educate and work with the home owners to ensure the work selected is appropriate and done correctly. 

 

The positive side may very well be an increased number of people deciding that improvements are needed, followed by an increased need for professional guidance.

Yep - this is one reason that we are building the system so that the homeowner (or an assessor) can convert the scoring session to a full operational session (in http://hes.lbl.gov) and refine the house characterization and assumptions to fit the actual conditions.

Again, thank you for your comments.  The DOE isn't responding to any inquiries about the program.  LBL was tasked with developing the tool and I'm sure they will do a good job.  They always do.

Dr. Mills,

Any recent news on the Home Energy Score Program?  FYI - our training and implementation through the University of Missouri will be completed this week.  I believe we will hear of major activity after labor day regarding the program.  (That is what I am hearing through sources)  

Just thought I would get your opinion....
