Good morning everyone, I was hoping you could help settle a debate.

When choosing to insulate the cold water intake pipe on a HWH, is it necessary or recommended to insulate the pipe beyond the first elbow?

While I recognize there are reasons to insulate the cold water pipes (condensate, etc.) our area of concern is for thermosiphoning only.

Take a clamp on temp  probe  like fluke or cooper  - then heat the tank and tell us what happen?    The only way to  stop DHW thermosiphoning  is to put in heat traps.   I use a IR  each building  and its fun to see the  heat leak.   Most is with in 5 feet but I see 20 feet on large flat runs,  the hoter water the more thermosiphoning happens.

I like to take it to where it enters the wall if near the water heater or 6 inches past the first downward elbow
