Hi, I'd like to qualify for a BPI Certification, does anybody have experience in achieving BPI Certification success by educating themselves from resources available in the public domain as opposed to subscribing to a Study Program.

Will be happy to receive links to any Self Study programs available in the Public Domain i.e without charge.

Thank-you!

I'm not sure of that, but I would recommend taking the courses. Check with local utilities and if you are unemployed; your state government to see if they have training programs that are discounted or free of charge to you.

You gain a lot of insight from back and forth conversations with instructors.

Bijou, if you can edit that title, edit it.  You are looking for responses from a very small subset of people on this site.  Get their attention!

Thanks David; does the new headline make sense

Hi Bijou,
I have a different problem, but my solution has been similar to what you are asking. Being almost totally deaf I can get totally lost in a classroom environment. My solution was self study. I read "Residential Energy" (Krigger and Dorsi) twice cover to cover. And there are other notable books out there.

Depending upon your experience you may want to study building construction, HVAC, and other segments of this industry. With the tremendous amount of information that you can pick up on your own, if you do decide to take a class you will be way ahead of the class.

Once you have the knowledge, getting the certification is another story.

Bud

Bud,

Your response is much appreciated!

Yes there is honestly a ton of knowledge out there, except it is unstructured - if you know what you are looking for and in the order that you are looking for it.....thats another story.

The problem is when you want to accomplish the certification on a time schedule basis; you look for a structured process to get you there.

Point noted; good luck!

The bigger question might be, what do you want to do with your certification?  Independent energy auditors are finding it difficult to market their services against larger businesses that offer a full package.  If you can work for a full service company then they can assist with the real world experience needed for the certification.

As for a structured approach, Residential Energy is the book used by many courses.

Bud

I do intend to offer Energy Audit services and resell energy efficiency solutions independently; hence the interest in qualification.

Thanks for all the advice!

Careful- you get what you pay for. It's either an expensive training up front, or a lot of expensive mistakes in front of your clients. Take it from me- I've put myself through "business school" but instead of taking 2 years and $80,000, it took 5 years and cost several hundred grand.

Thanks Corbett, I am aware of that trap!
