A new home energy calculator, please share your thoughts

We've recently launched a home energy calculator to help home owners and professionals alike estimate the heat energy gain and loss of homes and large-scale structures. We really tried our best to put a good product out there and we would love to hear your opinions about it.

We figured Home Energy Pros is the best place to find out if our product is any good, so please view this post as us trying to get some insight into what we can do better, where we did alright and where we failed, etc.

You can visit the main website at http://www.homeenergycalc.com/ and the actual calculator at http://calculator.homeenergycalc.com/

We're really looking forward to hearing your thoughts, suggestions, criticism, and whatever you feel might help us improve on what we currently have.

HPxml compliant?

Thanks for taking a look at the app tedkidd. Unfortunately, no, not at this point. No exports are possible, just saving within the app, and for the calculations it uses the standards developed by the ACCA for the Manual J. But this could be something we might keep in mind for future development if it's something that users might find very useful.

I am having a problem with the calculator loading. The screen just pauses and does nothing. Please advise...

Does it hang at 'Resolving location'? If it does than you need to allow the browser/app to use your location. The calculator uses the location to draw data about the weather throughout the year, length of days, etc, all the location stuff that influences the heat energy gain and loss.

No, the page pops up with the globe, and an empty rectangular loading box underneath. There is no "Resolving location" on the page.

Hmm, interesting. We've never had this problem before. Could you please let me know what browser you're using and what version? Are you on a PC or a Mac?

Also, could you please go to http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html and hit Check Now and tell me what version of Flash Player you have installed?

11.9.900.170

I am using Mozilla on a PC.

Thanks so much for reporting this to us. I wasn't able to replicate this on my PC with exactly the same versions, so we will investigate this further and hopefully find a fix soon. I'll get back with a reply as soon as we do. Thanks again.

Thanks, looks like a pretty comprehensive program that I would use if you can get it working for us.

Let me know,

John

It seems easy to use but I didn't see the option to change HVAC systems.  Also, how do you run energy improvement scenarios in it?

Jon

HEC provides the heat loss and gain calculations only. It doesn't assume anything about what climate control equipment might be installed. It simply informs the user that their homes "envelope" gains and losses X btu's or kwh to their given climate.
