DESCRIPTION:This FREE training program, funded by the Illinois Dept. o
 f Commerce and Economic Opportunity, is designed for unemployed and u
 nderemployed individuals with experience in home improvement, a keen
  desire to begin a career in the carpentry trade, and a genuine inte
 rest in the rapidly developing specialties of green carpentry and weat
 herization.\nThe course introduces participants to residential framing
  systems (historical, contemporary and “green”); floor and wall co
 nstruction; ceiling and roof construction; and chimney, chase and soff
 it enclosures.\nIt then extends this training to include the following
 :\n\noverview of the green construction of new buildings and the energ
 y-efficient “retrofitting” of existing buildings\ndemonstration of
  the use of a blower door and infra-red gun, the essential equipment f
 or detecting—and developing measures to reduce—energy loss in exis
 ting buildings\nproper installation of exterior doors, windows, and at
 tic access closures\ninsulation materials (fiberglass, cellulose and f
 oam) as well as installation techniques\nsealing of air leaks to preve
 nt the loss of heated/air conditioned air\n\n \nTrainee Eligibility C
 riteria: \nApplicants for this training should ideally live in the A
 uburn Gresham, Austin, East Garfield Park, Englewood, Humboldt Park, L
 ogan Square, North Lawndale, Roseland,  West Englewood, West Garfield
  Park, or West Town Community Areas, and meet the following qualifica
 tions:\n1)  Physically capable of—and preferably with experience o
 f—work encountered in the carpentry trade and weatherization operati
 ons:\n\ncapable of working in all kinds of weather (windy, hot, cold, 
 humid)\ncapable of lifting up to 80 lbs.\ncapable of working on ladder
 s and scaffolds up to 3 stories high\ncapable of working in poorly lit
  spaces\ncapable of crouching, crawling and working in confined spaces
  \n\n2)  Mentally capable of work encountered in the carpentry tra
 de and weatherization operations:\n\n able to read and do math at the
  10th grade level or higher (NOTE: if lower than 10th grade, requir
 ed to bring scores up to 10th grade level before program starts\n wi
 lling to learn to read construction-related documents, such as safety 
 information, equipment instructions, floor plans, diagrams, drawings a
 nd work orders\nable to take measurements and perform calculations inv
 olving space, volume and materials\nwilling to comply with safety regu
 lations and follow directions \n\n3)  Determined to get a job (or w
 illing to consider temporary or transitional employment opportunities)
 \n4)  Willing to commit to all components of the training program:
  vocational skills (above), computer skills, career exploration, job r
 eadiness, job search, and job placement\n\nObjective: to help trainee
